How much does it cost to call India from the UK?

With DanaTel, calls to India cost £0.20 a minute plus £0.10 for each connected call. You're billed in 6-second steps, so a call of 1 minute 12 seconds is charged as 1.2 minutes, not 2. If nobody answers, or the call lasts 10 seconds or less, it costs nothing.

Call lengthYou pay
5 minutes£1.10
10 minutes£2.10
30 minutes£6.10

Prices are in pounds sterling and can change. The dialer shows the current rate for India as soon as you type the number, before you press Call, and the cost so far during the call. Credit is taken from your balance as you use it; there's no subscription.

How to dial India numbers

In the DanaTel dialer, type 91 (the + is already there), then the number without its first 0. Or paste a number that starts with +91 or 0091. The dialer shows 🇮🇳 India and the price as soon as it recognises the code.

Mobiles

+91 XXXXX XXXXX

Indian mobile numbers have 10 digits and start with 6, 7, 8 or 9. Add +91 in front: 98XXX XXXXX becomes +91 98XXX XXXXX. If the number is written with a 0 in front (11 digits), leave the 0 out.

Landlines

Landlines start with an area (STD) code. Drop its 0 and add +91: Delhi 011 becomes +91 11, Mumbai 022 becomes +91 22, Kolkata 033 becomes +91 33, Chennai 044 becomes +91 44, Hyderabad 040 becomes +91 40 and Bengaluru 080 becomes +91 80.

Area code and number together always come to 10 digits for Indian landlines, so a shorter area code means a longer local number.

Calling India: questions

Can I call Indian mobiles on any network?

Yes. Mobile numbers in India cost the same whichever network they're on, and so do landlines.

Do I dial the 0 when calling India?

No. After +91, type the number without the 0 that's used for calls inside India. A mobile number should have 10 digits after +91.

What time is it in India compared with the UK?

India is 5½ hours ahead of the UK in winter and 4½ hours ahead when UK clocks go forward for summer. India doesn't change its clocks.

Do I need to install an app?

No. DanaTel works in the web browser you already have, on your phone or computer. Sign in, type the number and press Call. On a phone you can add DanaTel to your home screen so it opens like an app, but you don't have to.

How much does it cost?

Each country has a price per minute, shown on our rates page and in the dialer before you call. Some countries also have a small fee per connected call, shown next to the rate. There's no sign-up fee, subscription or monthly charge: you buy credit and it's used as you call.

How is billing calculated?

Calls are billed in 6-second steps: the call length is rounded up to the next 6 seconds, not the next minute, then multiplied by the country's per-minute rate, plus its connection fee if it has one. For example, a call of 2 minutes 3 seconds is billed as 2.1 minutes. The dialer shows the cost so far while you talk.

Are unanswered calls charged?

No. If nobody answers, the line is busy or the call can't connect, you pay nothing, connection fee included.
