Questions about DanaTel

How calling, billing and top-ups work. Can't find an answer? Email support@danadata.net.

Do I need to install an app?

No. DanaTel works in the web browser you already have, on your phone or computer. Sign in, type the number and press Call. On a phone you can add DanaTel to your home screen so it opens like an app, but you don't have to.

How much does it cost?

Each country has a price per minute, shown on our rates page and in the dialer before you call. Some countries also have a small fee per connected call, shown next to the rate. There's no sign-up fee, subscription or monthly charge: you buy credit and it's used as you call.

How is billing calculated?

Calls are billed in 6-second steps: the call length is rounded up to the next 6 seconds, not the next minute, then multiplied by the country's per-minute rate, plus its connection fee if it has one. For example, a call of 2 minutes 3 seconds is billed as 2.1 minutes. The dialer shows the cost so far while you talk.

Are unanswered calls charged?

No. If nobody answers, the line is busy or the call can't connect, you pay nothing, connection fee included.

Are very short calls charged?

No. Calls that last 10 seconds or less are free, so a quick wrong number or a call that drops straight away costs nothing.

What is the minimum top-up?

£5. You can top up £5, £10 or £20 at a time.

Can I use DanaTel on my phone?

Yes. Open danatel.net in Safari on an iPhone or Chrome on Android, sign in and call. Calls use your Wi-Fi or mobile data, not your phone plan's minutes. Keep the DanaTel page open during the call.

Can I use DanaTel on a computer?

Yes, on Windows, Mac, Linux or a Chromebook, in a current browser. You need a microphone and speakers; a headset or earbuds work best and stop echo.

Which browsers work?

Recent versions of Chrome, Safari, Edge and Firefox. If a call won't connect, update your browser and check that DanaTel is allowed to use your microphone.

Can I call mobiles and landlines?

Yes. You can call mobile and landline numbers in every country we cover, at the same per-minute rate. DanaTel can't be used to call emergency services.

What happens if my balance is too low?

The dialer checks your balance before each call. If it's too low for the country you're calling, the Call button changes to Top up. During a call, the call can last as long as your balance covers, and ends automatically when your credit runs out.

How do I top up?

Go to Wallet, choose Top up, pick an amount and pay by debit or credit card. Payment is handled by Stripe, and your balance usually updates within a few seconds.

How do I get a refund?

Credit you've bought can't be refunded, except where the law requires it (see our Terms). If you think a call was charged wrongly, email support@danadata.net with the date and time of the call and we'll look into it.

How does microphone permission work?

The first time you press Call, your browser asks whether DanaTel can use your microphone. Choose Allow, otherwise the person you call can't hear you. If you blocked it by mistake, open your browser's site settings for danatel.net, allow the microphone and reload the page.

Is my call encrypted?

The connection between your browser and DanaTel's call servers is encrypted. From there the call reaches the other person over ordinary telephone networks, like any international phone call, so it isn't end-to-end encrypted.

Can people call me back on DanaTel?

No. DanaTel is for making calls abroad; it doesn't give you a number people can ring.
