How to call a UK landline from Europe
Dialling a UK landline from Europe takes three steps. Here's how, which numbers won't work from abroad, and how to keep long calls home affordable.
How to dial
- Start with + on a mobile, or 00, the exit code in every EU country.
- Then 44, the UK's country code.
- Then the number without its first 0. So 020 7946 0000 becomes +44 20 7946 0000, and 0161 496 0000 becomes +44 161 496 0000.
Which UK numbers work from abroad
| Starts with | What it is | From abroad |
|---|---|---|
| 01, 02 | Landlines | Yes |
| 07 | Mobiles | Yes |
| 03 | Government, banks and charities, charged like a landline | Usually |
| 0800, 0808 | Freephone | Not always: some only take calls from UK phones |
| 084, 087, 09 | Service and premium-rate numbers | Often not, and not with DanaTel |
| 999, 111, 101 | Short numbers | No: they only work on phones in the UK |
If an organisation only gives a number that won't work, look on its website for a number "from abroad" or "from outside the UK". More in calling UK and US numbers from abroad.
Watch out for roaming charges
If you're using a UK mobile in Europe, check your network's roaming charges before a long call. Some UK networks charge extra to use your phone in Europe, and calls back to the UK aren't always in your allowance. A local SIM or eSIM avoids roaming, but calling the UK from it is usually an international call.
Calling from your browser
DanaTel calls UK landlines and mobiles from the browser on your phone or computer, with nothing to install. Over Wi-Fi there's no roaming charge at all, and on mobile data a call uses only a little data. Calls to the UK cost £0.05/min + £0.10 per connected call, billed in 6-second steps, and unanswered calls are free. See every country's price.
