Why HMRC has separate numbers for callers abroad
HMRC's main helplines are 0300 numbers meant for callers in the UK. For each of its busiest helplines, GOV.UK also lists a number for calling from outside the UK. Those are the numbers above. They're ordinary UK numbers, so DanaTel charges its normal price for calls to the UK.
How to dial them
- In DanaTel, type the number exactly as shown, starting +44. The dialler shows the price before you call.
- From any other phone, replace the + with your country's exit code: 00 in most countries, 011 from the US and Canada.
What it costs
Calls to UK numbers cost £0.05/min, billed in 6-second steps, so time on hold costs only what it lasts. A call can last up to 180 minutes, as long as your credit covers it. How call billing works.
Tips for getting through
- All four lines are open Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm UK time, and closed on UK bank holidays. Each number above also shows its hours in your own time.
- Have your National Insurance number to hand, and your UTR for Self Assessment. HMRC asks security questions before it can discuss your tax.
- When the recorded menu asks you to press a number, tap Keypad during the call.
- Some things don't need a call at all: your HMRC online account on GOV.UK lets you check your tax, update your details and send a Self Assessment return.
Other HMRC helplines
If your question is about something else, such as VAT or a business tax, find the contact page for that service on GOV.UK and look for the line marked "outside the UK". For more on which UK numbers work from abroad, see calling UK and US numbers from abroad.
